The city was built on a ridge, and on top of that ridge are several important buildings and complexes. Taken together, these make up the â€Å"Royal Compound† of La Venta, an extremely important ceremonial site. The Olmec Civilization: The Olmec culture is the earliest of the great Mesoamerican civilizations and is considered by many to be the mother culture of later peoples such as the Maya and the Aztecs. The Olmecs are associated with several archaeological sites, but two of their cities are considered more important than the others: San Lorenzo and La Venta. Both of these city names are modern, as the original names of these cities have been lost. The Olmecs had a complex cosmos and religion.a including a pantheon of several gods. They also had long-distance trade routes and were extremely talented artists and sculptors. With the fall of La Venta around 400 B.C. the Olmec culture collapsed, succeeded by the epi-Olmec. La Venta: La Venta was the greatest city of its day. Although there were other cultures in Mesoamerica at the time La Venta was at its apex, no other city could compare in size, influence or grandeur. A powerful ruling class could command thousands of workers for public works tasks, such as bringing huge blocks of stone many miles to be carved at Olmec workshops in the city. It stands about 30 meters (100 feet) high and has a diameter of about 120 meters (400 feet) It is man-made of nearly 100,000 cubic meters (3.5 million cubic feet) of earth, which must have taken thousands of man-hours to accomplish, and it is the highest point of La Venta. Unfortunately, part of the top of the mound was destroyed by nearby oil operations in the 1960’s. The Olmec considered mountains sacred, and since there are no mountains nearby, it is thought by some researchers that Complex C was created to stand-in for a sacred mountain in religious ceremonies. Four stelae located at the base of the mound, with â€Å"mountain faces† on them, seem to bear out this theory (Grove). Complex A: Complex A, located at the base of the Great Pyramid to the north, is one of the most important Olmec sites ever discovered. Complex A was a religious and ceremonial complex and served as a royal necropolis as well. Complex A is home to a series of small mounds and walls, but it is what is underground that is most interesting. Five massive offerings have been found in Complex A: these are large pits which were dug out and then filled with stones, colored clay and mosaics. Many smaller offerings have been found as well, including figurines, celts, masks, jewelry and other Olmec treasures given to the gods. Five tombs have been found in the complex, and although the bodies of the occupants decomposed long ago, important objects have been found there. To the north, Complex A was guarded by three colossal heads, and several sculptures and stelae of note have been found in the complex. Complex B: To the south of the Great Pyramid, Complex B is a large plaza (referred to as Plaza B) and a series of four smaller mounds. This airy, open area was most likely a place for the Olmec people to gather to witness ceremonies that took place on or near the pyramid. Several noteworthy sculptures were found in Complex B, including a colossal head and three Olmec-style sculpted thrones. The Stirling Acropolis: The Stirling Acropolis is a massive earthen platform which dominates the eastern side of Complex B. On top are two small, circular mounds and two long, parallel mounds that some believe may be an early ballcourt. Many fragments of broken statues and monuments as well as a drainage system and basalt columns have been found in the acropolis, leading to speculation that it may have once been the royal palace where the ruler of La Venta and his family resided. It is named for American archaeologist Matthew Stirling (1896-1975) who did a great deal of important work at La Venta. There is a remarkable trend all around the world, even in the developed countries, tha t even if women are well educated and participate actively in the workforce, they still earn less than men. For instance, in Australia, women earn around 80% of wage men earn (Newman 2014). This gender pay came has been persistent and it is puzzling through the equality ratio. A huge range of rules and legislations have been implemented to deal with such issues all around the globe. Even if both the female and male managers tend to show the gender bias in payment and hiring process, also in the occurrence of the wage gap across all the occupations and industries (Foley et al. 2015). This trend suggests that the discrimination in payment is an outcome of cultural and historical b eliefs which is mostly common to the world. The most notable factor that may explain the gender pay gap is the working hour difference in women and men. In most of the cases women tend to work in the part time and temporary jobs. However, even if the full time, responsible jobs are considered, it has been proved in many studies, that the median earning of women is approximately 75 percent that of a man. This point out a considerable pay gap exists between women and men. Also there is a factor of vertical segregation that arises in both the private and public sectors when men are located in a higher position like managerial roles or executives and their subordinates are women. Women are generally given fewer opportunities to engage in promoting to higher positions, as a result to that women are restrained their flexibility upwards to the organizational hierarchy and there is a tendency of under-representing them in the senior positions (Beaurain and Masclet 2016). This common phenomenon is called the glass ceiling effect which refers to the artificial obstacle on the basis of organizational bias which prevents the qualified individual from moving forward in the organization and into managerial positions. This factor contributes more ti the gender pay gap. The family obligations such as giving birth or taking care of children and other family members, there are a huge percentage of women who do not participate in the permanent jobs; rather they prefer cart time and flexible jobs. This factor has been found in several studies that indicates that around 36 percent of women become absent to their work places due to pregnancy (Guner, Kaya and Snchez-Marcos 2014). It is also indicated in studies that married men tend to work longer hours than the married women. There is n doubt that part time jobs pay way less than the full time jobs , therefore the uneven participation causes women to be categorized in the lower level of income group with adequate chances to sharpen their skills and promotion opportunity. Another factor that adds up to the gender pay gap that is the educational ways that women and men take in their higher education and passively affects the earnings in the work place. Historically it has been seen that men tend to opt for science subjects while women opt for education and humanities (Geoffroy and Chamberland 2014). However, this is another stereotype that has been made for decades that women are not good at science subjects; rather they are more comfortable in humanities. Therefore the pay in the male occupations is higher than the female occupations. Many educationists agree that there is an active gender discrimination which is partly accounted for most of the gender pay gap. Several companies advertize for vacancies listed separately for women and men, where the mens pay is greatly higher than the women. In most of the situations the skills of women are undervalued and in some cases unrecognized, which is caused by the social stereotype of gender discrimination and the perception that the capabilities of women are less (OReilly et al. 2015). Moreover, in many situations women and men having same skills, work experience and educational qualifications are treated unequally in a same job role. However, it is illegal to discriminate anyone from being employed in any occupation in the developed countries, yet the gender discrimination and biasness initiate most of the gender pay gaps. No matter it is unintentional or intentional, the social gender discrimination and bias is the most crucial element in the perseverance of pay gap bet ween women and men. There might be few limitations that might block the way of equality in gender pay, but there are numbers of benefits that can be gained if the gender pay gap is absent. The increase in the pay will lead more empowerment of women and will help to reduce the chances of violence, harassment and other exploitations at the workplace. In addition to that, it will bring an optimistic effect to the families which ultimately will improve the economical situations. Also if there is a equal pay in the organizations, the staff productivity and morale will increase and absence of employees might be decreased as well. However, there are always interventions of the government implementing the fair pay regulations among the employees, though several academicians claim that only the legislative reformation is not sufficient. There should be non discriminatory policies and practices in the work place and the policies should be cautiously designed and well implemented and should also be monitored to bu ild a positive image to the employees. For that reason the human resource management team should play a crucial role in making the decisions to support the strategies. It is recommended to the organizations to use systematic and constant procedure of evaluation system of the potential candidates and the employees as well to tackle the gender based inequalities. Much of the material that relates to the field of Artificial Intelligence deals with human psychology and the nature of consciousness. Exhaustive debate on consciousness and the possibilities of consciousnessness in machines has adequately, in my opinion, revealed that it is most unlikely that we will ever converse or interract with a machine of artificial consciousness. In John Searle's collection of lectures, Minds, Brains and Science, arguments centering around the mind-body problem alone is sufficient to convince a reasonable person that there is no way science will ever unravel the mysteries of consciousness. Key to Searle's analysis of consciousness in the context of Artificial Intelligence machines are refutations of strong and weak AI theses. Strong AI Theorists (SATs) believe that in the future, mankind will forge machines that will think as well as, if not better than humans. To them, pesent technology constrains this achievement. The Weak AI Theorists (WATs), almost converse to the SATs, believe that if a machine performs functions that resemble a human's, then there must be a correlation between it and consciousness. To them, there is no technological impediment to thinking machines, because our most advanced machines already think. It is important to review Searle's refutations of these respective theorists' proposition to establish a foundation (for the purpose of this essay) for discussing the applications of Artificial Intelligence, both now and in the future. Strong AI Thesis Strong AI Thesis, according to Searle, can be described in four basic propositions. Proposition one categorizes human thought as the result of computational processes. Given enough computational power, memory, inputs, etc., machines will be able to think, if you believe this proposition. Proposition two, in essence, relegates the human mind to the software bin. Proponents of this proposition believe that humans just happen to have biological computers that run wetware as opposed to software. Proposition three, the Turing proposition, holds that if a conscious being can be convinced that, through context-input manipulation, a machine is intelligent, then it is. Proposition four is where the ends will meet the means. It purports that when we are able to finally understand the brain, we will be able to duplicate its functions. Thus, if we replicate the computational power of the mind, we will then understand it. Through argument and experimentation, Searle is able to refute or severely diminish these propositions. Searle argues that machines may well be able to understand syntax, but not the semantics, or meaning communicated thereby. Esentially, he makes his point by citing the famous Chinese Room Thought Experiment. It is here he demonstrates that a computer (a non-chinese speaker, a book of rules and the chinese symbols) can fool a native speaker, but have no idea what he is saying. By proving that entities don't have to understand what they are processing to appear as understanding refutes proposition one. Proposition two is refuted by the simple fact that there are no artificial minds or mind-like devices. Proposition two is thus a matter of science fiction rather than a plausible theory A good chess program, like my (as yet undefeated) Chessmaster 4000 Trubo refutes proposition three by passing a Turing test. It appears to be intelligent, but I know it beats me through number crunching and symbol manipulation. The Chessmaster 4000 example is also an adequate refutation of Professor Simon's fourth proposition: you can understand a process if you can reproduce it. Because the Software Toolworks company created a program for my computer that simulates the behavior of a grandmaster in the game, doesn't mean that the computer is indeed intelligent. Weak AI Thesis There are five basic propositions that fall in the Weak AI Thesis (WAT) camp. The first of these states that the brain, due to its complexity of operation, must function something like a computer, the most sophisticated of human invention.
